JAMES "SOUL" BROWN (1933-2006)

James Joseph Brown Jr., morreu hoje (25/12/06) aos 73 anos em Atlanta na Georgia (EUA), após ser internado com forte pneumonia. Brown foi o principal impulsionador da evolução do gospel e do rhythm and blues para o soul e o funk, sendo a invenção deste último gênero creditada a ele. Também deixou sua marca em outros gêneros musicais, incluindo rock, jazz, reggae, disco, no hip-hop e na música dançante e eletrônica em geral. Durante os anos 60, lançou canções tais como "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", "I GotYou (I Feel Good)", "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a Sex Machine)" e "I'm Black and I'm Proud". Em 1988, foi condenado a seis anos por posse de drogas e armas. Sua carreira de músico profissional iniciou-se em 1953, atingindo a fama no fim da década de 1950 e início da de 1960, graças à força de suas performances ao vivo e a uma seqüência de grandes sucessos. Apesar de numerosos problemas pessoais e alguns insucessos, ele continuou a produzir sucessos nas duas décadas seguintes.
